Mike Smith has been actively involved in the sport of rowing since the 1980s. He first embraced rowing as a passion when he joined the Argonaut Rowing Club, Toronto. His love of the sport did not diminish when he eventually moved north to Barrie. In time, Mike became a member of the broader rowing community when he joined the BRC as an executive member (most notably that of president) and as a successful high school coach. .
In the spring of 2007, Mike Smith and his partner Diane Barr founded the Severn River Rowing Club, south of Gravenhurst. With private equipment, and a few aged acquisitions, the club set out to: introduce rowing to area; support existing regional competitive rowers; foster an environment of geniality amongst established district clubs; enhance membership and develop the youth (high school/club) base.
Despite the fact that the Severn River Rowing Club is a mere 3 years old, it has already added to the local rowing fabric. The club has been represented at numerous provincial CORA regattas, Royal Canadian Henley, Head of the Trent, Head of the Rideau, provincial youth development camps, Junior National events and high school regattas.
All aspects of athlete development are seriously undertaken by Mike. LTR programs, spring erging regimens, water training plans, individual and crew coaching instruction are weighted equally. He has also assisted members/crews from other clubs. Mike has coordinated coaching sessions for the Muskoka.,Barrie and Orillia Rowing Club members. He is recognized as being a very knowledgeable coach and leader.
In summary, Mike has and will continue to advance the sport of rowing as well as rowing development and excellence in the North Central Region.
